We are so excited to get started on this tiny house expansion. We have enjoyed many aspects of living in our tiny 400 square foot house but with baby number four on the way it’s time to add on.
We have spent hours and hours drawing up plans and figuring out what we wanted to do with our house for the past 3 years. We always planned to make this tiny house temporary. Truth be told we planned for it only to be a year at the most. Now 3 years later we are still here in the same place.
We have decided that we will double our current house by adding a 400 square foot addition. This will give us a bigger bathroom with a place for a washer AND dryer. It will give us a second bedroom for the kids, a larger living room and larger kitchen with island. What I’m most excited about is our built in corner bench style dining room table! This will have place for food storage for our vegetable garden, homeschool supplies and so much more!
There have been many things that have challenged us in our current tiny house, like homeschooling with an easy area to get our work done. The kids room is another challenge area as we all know kids love toys and collecting things. With three children in one room we have done the best that we can to keep it organized and easy to clean up but nothing has seemed to really make a big impact.
The two boys are excited to have a room they don’t have to share with their little sister. Bookworm is excited to have his very own shelving unit to house all his bugs, skulls, and other creature related items (that completely gross Mom out). Firebug can’t wait to have his own closet space where he can keep his tools and work gloves that his brother always steals.
Now poor Cutie Pie, she’s so excited to share a room with the baby until she realizes that means not being with her brothers. I’m sure once the baby is here and she gets a bit older she will enjoy having her own ‘girl’ space that isn’t over run with all the boy toys. She finally can have her kitchen set up and baby doll toys where she can easily play with them. For now though she’s just sad that she won’t be with her brothers. I can’t expect much more from an almost 3 year old that hasn’t known anything different.
Cowboy has so many things that he is excited about. He can’t wait to get building! He is a craftsman/contractor at heart. He’s a truck driver out of necessity. So building this addition and planning all the custom built-ins that will eventually be done has him excited. He also hates our current tiny house. We built it for $5000. We used the cheapest materials, free cabinets, and lots of hand-me-downs in the process. It was great for what we needed then and it would have been fine for the year we planned to be here. After 3 years though things are not working out they way they do in regular houses. He’s ready to be proud of where we live. He’s ready to show people that he really is a fantastic carpenter that can build amazing works of art.
Can you tell we are all ready for a little more space? Also, living in a place we can be proud of and enjoy. And we plan to do it all in cash which means no added debt! Who wouldn’t be happy about that?
